NEP’s roots in Santiniketan education model of Rabindranath Tagore, says Amit Shah

MUMBAI/KOLKATA, MAY 2023 (GSN):
The National Education Policy was inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s model of education and introduced at Santiniketan, Union home minister Amit Shah said in tribute to the poet on his 162nd birth anniversary on Tuesday at the Science City Auditorium here.

Shah claimed that “Kaviguru strengthened the roots of the Indian thought process by negating the European idea of individual liberty by saying a tree cannot be free by losing its touch with the earth”.
He also said the way Tagore elevated himself above narrow differences in opinion is what today’s politicians need to learn.

“In Santiniketan, Tagore amalgamated the ancient Indian knowledge system with modern learning techniques. Tagore gave maximum impetus to learning in the mothertongue. He knew one couldn’t explore his inner self without the use of his mothertongue. PM Modi was greatly inspired by these aspects and incorporated them into NEP,” he said.

“Tagore was never attached to any political party. He did not agree with the non-cooperation movement of Gandhi ji nor did he accept Subhas Chandra Bose’s ousting from Congress at a crucial juncture of the Independence movement. But the disagreement never spoilt the friendship of these two great men of India. It didn’t restrict Tagore to call Gandhi ji Mahatma, nor Gandhi ji to call Tagore Gurudev. Modern-day politicians have a lot to learn from Tagore’s philosophy,” he said.
